My name is Carly Cook

I was born in Leesburg, Virginia on Feb 2 and grew up in Charles Town, West Virginia. I now attend Shepherd University where I live nearby, studying Communications and Graphic Design. I will be graduating in May of 2022. After graduation, I plan to fully resume my long standing job of wedding and events catering/serving on weekends, and pick up some kind of serving or bartending job on weekdays. I have always wanted to explore my options in different locations before trying to land a “big girl” career. I think that it’s really important to be young and experience what you can while you’re still able to. Another day is never promised.

Getting into Art

Growing up, my life was always revolving on whatever schedule I had signed up for at the time. I was involved in gymnastics and cheerleading for as long as I can remember. Eventually, I was in competitive cheer, and I had picked up travel softball during that time as well. I played softball all through high school, keeping up with travel during the summers. When college began I started to focus on my studies much more, while trying out multiple jobs until I began working weddings. When Covid-19 hit, my life changed drastically. At the time, I was working at both Savoir Fare and the USDA as a student lab assistant, and both shut down. There were no events to work and the government had sent all employees home to work remotely. After a couple months, they cut all student positions. I had never spent such a miserable amount of time alone with nothing to look forward to. I wanted so badly to be anywhere other than my house, and I feel like a lot of us can relate to that through the pandemic. I started painting in attempt to let my mind take me to a different place. It was really an escape for me at that point; I had always loved drawing and painting but I had never relied on it for my sanity in a way. From there, as life returned to normal, I continued to shift my schedule to take whatever classes would land me in the art department or studio. I see more beauty in the world now that I’ve learned all about how to create it and what to look for in what is already surrounding me, and I can’t keep myself from imagining a million new things I want to create each day. Letting art change my view on life has filled me with inspiration and I want to do my best to explore that and share it with as many people as possible.
